Getting a New Laptop Shouldn't Mean Starting From Scratch

This past weekend I worked with a senior customer whose laptop screen had cracked. The laptop itself was old enough that replacing the screen didn't make sense next to the cost of a new machine, so we talked it through and she decided to get a new laptop instead. That's where the real work started.

Why We Didn't Just Replace the Screen

I use the same 50% rule I use for every repair-or-replace decision: if the repair cost is more than half of what the machine is worth today, replacing it is usually the smarter move. On a laptop that old, a screen replacement alone would have been a bad trade. I told her that plainly instead of just doing the repair she originally called about.

The Real Work Started After the New Laptop Arrived

Getting a new laptop set up isn't the fast part. Transferring a couple hundred GB of files, all her internet bookmarks, and getting her programs back took several hours. I went through and itemized every application on her old laptop one by one so I could set the new one up to match it, not just "a new computer" but her computer, just faster.

    Why the Itemized List Mattered

For a lot of customers, especially older customers who didn't grow up with this technology, a new laptop that looks and behaves nothing like the old one is genuinely stressful. Every icon in a different place, every program missing, is one more thing to relearn. Matching her setup as closely as possible meant she could sit down at her new laptop and actually recognize it, instead of feeling like she was starting over.

This Isn't Special Treatment. It's How Every Job Gets Done Here

I don't have a separate tier of service for senior customers versus anyone else. Everyone gets the same free diagnostic, the same honest answer about repair versus replace, and the same care taken with their setup and their data. Most jobs turn around in 1 to 2 business days; something like this migration takes as long as it actually takes, and I don't pad the bill for the hours it took to get it right.

If you or someone in your family is dealing with an old laptop that's finally given out, or just dreading the idea of starting over on a new one, that's exactly the kind of job I do. Call or email and we'll figure out what actually makes sense for your situation.
